Text to Speech
Paste any text and listen with your browser's built-in speech engine.
About This Tool
Text to Speech uses your browser's built-in Web Speech API to convert written text into natural-sounding spoken audio. It is perfect for people with low vision, reading difficulties, dyslexia, or anyone who prefers listening over reading. Because the synthesis happens entirely on your device, your text never leaves your browser — there are no servers, no uploads, and no tracking.
This tool supports multiple languages and voices depending on your operating system and browser configuration. On Windows, you can install additional voice packs; on macOS and iOS, a wide range of high-quality system voices is available. Android devices typically include Google Text-to-Speech engine voices.
Tool Guide
Enter your text
Type or paste any text into the input area. There is no character limit, but shorter segments produce more natural-sounding speech output.
Choose a voice
Select from the available system voices. Each voice corresponds to a different language and accent installed on your device.
Adjust the speed
Use the speed slider to slow down (0.5×) or speed up (2.0×) the narration. The default 1.0× is a natural reading pace.
Play and control
Click Read Aloud to start, and Stop to halt at any time. The status indicator shows the current playback state.
How to Use
- Best for: Long-form articles, emails, study notes, or any text you'd rather hear than read.
- Speed tuning: Start at 1.0×. If you find the default too slow, increase in 0.1 increments. Professional screen reader users often listen at 1.5×–2.0×.
- Voice selection: Try multiple voices to find one with a clear, natural tone. Some system voices sound more robotic than others.
- Privacy: All processing is local. No text is stored or transmitted. Refresh the page to clear everything.
- Limitation: The voice list depends on your operating system. If you only see one or two voices, install additional language packs in your system settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this tool upload my text to a server?
No. Text to Speech runs entirely in your browser using the Web Speech API. Your text is processed locally and never sent over the internet.
Why don't I see any voices in the dropdown?
Voice availability depends on your operating system and browser. On some systems, voices load asynchronously — try refreshing the page. If still empty, install TTS voice packs in your OS settings (e.g., Windows Settings → Time & Language → Speech).
Can I use this tool offline?
Yes, if your browser has cached the page. The speech synthesis uses your system's local voice engine, so it works without an internet connection after the page loads.
The speech sounds robotic. How can I improve it?
The voice quality depends on your system's TTS engine. Modern OS versions (Windows 11, macOS Sonoma+, Android 12+) include neural voices that sound much more natural. Check your system settings for "natural" or "neural" voice options.
Is there a character limit for the text?
There is no hard character limit imposed by the tool. However, very long texts may cause the browser's speech engine to pause or restart. For best results with long documents, break the text into smaller segments.
Does it work on mobile devices?
Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works in mobile browsers. On iOS, the speech engine uses the system's built-in voices. On Android, it uses the Google TTS engine.
